The problem? It is missed visits
Use rates of physical therapy are extremely low. Referral rates are around 20% of the time, and only 24-50% of patients show up after referral. This results in an overall use rate of 4%!
This does not account for no-show rates of around 10% and 73% of patients missing at least one visit during an episode of care.

Who to target?
Several clear factors are associated with missed visits throughout the care process, from scheduling to after-scheduling (no-shows), and follow-up visits. Patients who are referred by primary or urgent care, have higher BMIs, use Medicare/Medicaid, live further away, have more time between visits, and have more time between their scheduling call and their visit date are less likely to show up.

How patients choose care?
Patients have limited knowledge of physical therapists’ abilities, including how exercises are prescribed and that physical therapists can make diagnoses. Also, the healthcare system is increasingly difficult to navigate.
